INTERIOR TIPS

My bathroom gets very steamy, does this mean that the paint will peel off?

Rooms such as a kitchen or bathroom are likely to be subject to high humidity and condensation.

These rooms require a special paint to cope with these conditions as an ordinary emulsion paint may begin to peel.

Attica Group  recommend the use of their specialised Kitchens & Bathrooms paint which is specially formulated to be moisture resistant in areas susceptible to condensation.

Dulux Kitchens & Bathrooms paint has an attractive satin finish which means it is easier to clean than ordinary emulsion paints and is 10 times tougher than conventional silk emulsion, to help keep your walls looking good for much longer.

How do I paint radiators?

Radiators must be painted with either Gloss or Satinwood which are both suitable for metal.

If you paint them with emulsion i.e. water-based paint then they may go sticky and tacky when the radiator is warm. They will also get dirty quickly as dirt gets embedded in the soft paint.

Remember radiators don't have to be painted white. In fact the best way to disguise a radiator is to paint it a similar colour to the walls. To paint a radiator firstly turn the radiator off and make sure that is absolutely cold. Ensure that all flaky paint is removed and that the surface is clean and dry. Prime any bare metal surface with Traditional metal primer, available from Dulux, which is has special rust inhibiting pigments.

Once painted, try and leave the radiator cold for as long as possible afterwards for the paint to fully dry. When first turned on after painting you may experience a strong paint smell. This is not a defect and will quickly disappear.

How do I paint new plaster?

New plaster must be given enough time to dry completely before painting.

A good guide is when the plaster has turned a light pink colour all over. Wet plaster is a dark beige colour. Skimmed plaster board will dry quite quickly, depending upon the time of year. However, traditional solid construction can take several weeks, especially when conditions are cold and damp.

New or bare plaster should be sealed with either Sealapore, or, when using Vinyl Matt, Soft Sheen or Silk, a first coat thinned with 1 part water to 4 parts paint.

When using Dulux Kitchens & Bathrooms paint, always use Sealapore.

Is there an order to painting a room?

Painting a room in the correct order will save time and cost.

Begin with the ceilings (1), walls (2) (1 & 2 being water-based paints only), doors (3), windows (4) radiators (5) and skirting boards (6).

If the walls are to be finished with a wallpaper then all the paintwork must be completed first.
